The performance of Philip Grigorian called «Mayakovsky. Tragedy» finishing the cycle "Star" which is dedicated to five major figures of Soviet poetry of 20th century. The main character of this play is a poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. And, what’s important, not the one who's life periods you could find in encyclopedias, but fictional character from the futuristic text of 1913 «Vladimir Mayakovskiy. Tragedy». The name which impressed Boris Pasternak at that time, was created by an accident when rushing to show the manuscript to a censor. When Mayakovsky decided to perform a play, censor didn't allow him to change anything. This fact is already widely known by his colleagues. However, from the time when the first performance has occurred on December 1913 by Mayakovsky's direction and decorations of Filonov and Shkolnik. At that time the “Tragedy» wasn't perceived as the stage text which could be played here and now as an independent performance. Philip Grigorian decided to return this text it's right to be performed on stage.
Philip Grigorian, director:
"My desire was to gift this text those theatrical possibilities which it couldn't had got back in 1913, which Mayakovsky wasn't able to even dream of. Those are new ways to work with sounds and video and, primarily, professional cast of Gogol-Center.»
The premiere occured on 16 January 2018.
